NHS Care Records System ("the Spine")

Information

There is widespread public debate concerning the NHS Care Records System, also known as the "Spine".

The Department of Health and the NHS are developing a system whereby elements of patient’s medical records are stored centrally, on a secure database.

This information will be accessible by health care professionals who have legitimate need in order to provide patient care eg should you need emergency medical tratement when away from home.

Information, both for and against the system, can be found by following the links below. This is provided so that patients can form their own opinions about the system.

If you take the decision to opt out we will, on receipt of written authority from each patient (or in the case of children, a responsible adult) record the necessary coding in their records.

Patients should be aware that, if they do not opt out, their data will be uploaded to the central database when it becomes operational. We have no date for this yet.
