Confidentiality & Privacy

The Practice

The practice has been keeping medical records on computer since 1993. This data remains within the practice and is used by members of the team providing medical care and associated tasks such as repeat prescriptions. All practice staff are bound by a legal duty of confidentiality.

A summary of your medical record may be sent as part of a referral to hospital, so that clinicians there have a full understanding of you condition. Please tell us if there is anything you consider particularly sensitive and would not want including.
You have the right to view your records.

Children are entitled to appropriate confidential medical advice.

We have approximately 11,000 patients and we use the computer to see how well we treat patients and to pick out people who may need to be seen again or have a blood test or to review their condition. This improves the quality of your care. Quality audits earn performance payments from the NHS which help fund the services we provide.
.
We do not send your medical information to outside agencies, such as insurance companies, or your employer, without your consent. You have the right to read a report before it is sent if you wish to do so.

There are some instances where confidentiality can be broken, to protect a child, in serious crime and public interest.

Medical Audit data can be viewed by outside organisations for the purposes of health planning and ensuring correct payments are made to the practice. Usually the information is anonymised. You have the right to object to this. Occasionally identifiable data has to be used and then your consent is required.

In coming years the more important parts of your medical records will go into a central medical databank so that it can be viewed if you need treatment anywhere in the country. We do not yet have details of how data will be transferred or how patients will be consulted, so no action is required at this time.

If you contact us by email your email address will only be used by us in connection with your enquiry. It will not be disclosed to any third party.

If you have comments or questions about any of these issues please write or telephone the Practice Manager, Mr Chris Mullett.
